Hiking Melands Grønahei

P1430210-Melands Gronahei Hytte_webMedlands Grønahei is a beautiful and simple selvbetjent (self service) hytte situated on the lunar landscape of the Hjelmeland plateau.  Medlands Grønahei is open for the summer season from 10 June - 15 October.
The trail head starts about two hours from Stavanger near the village of Kleivaland.  The DNT estimates that the cabin is  4-5 hour hike from the parking area following the marked trail.
The trail winds gently through pine and birch forests before climbing steeply up toward the old farms at Ottastøl.  From Ottastøl the trail continues to climb past along waterfalls and lakes to the top of the Melandsgrønaheia plateau where it continues along the edge giving spectacular views over the desolate landscape before reaching the cabin.

The cabin was built in 1985, has a large kitchen and dining area and comfortably sleeps twelve people in three rooms.  There is also a loft that sleeps many more.

It is possible to make a multi day journey and lin up with Grassdalen, Stakken and the private Trodla-Tysdal cabins to the south, ending back at the same parking area.
On our recent trip, we decided to take an alternate route back to the parking area and headed north to the edge of the plateau.  Near the northern edge of the plateau there is a small trail marked with cairns that leads from Gjotastig, a private cabin, far above Liarstrandvatnet and Vassbotnvatnet.  There is no formal trail between Melands Grønahei and Gjotastig; make sure you have a map!
